Durgapur News Bureau, 10th September 2022: A third year B.Tech student of Durgapur NIT (National Institute of Technology) got drowned and died while bathing at Damodar River near the Durgapur Barrage. The incident happened on 10th September early morning.
According to police, the deceased’s name is Shubham Santam Raju, a resident of Hyderabad. Shubham was a third year computer science student of the college.
According to Durgapur NIT sources, Shubham went to Durgapur barrage with 6 friends this morning. Eyewitnesses say that the rest of the friends were standing on the bank of the river. Shubham went down to bathe in the river alone wearing clothes and pants. Unable to understand the depth of water in the river at that particular place due to deposition of sand above, he slowly got drowned. Other friends could not even get a chance to save him.
After receiving the news that a student had drowned in the river, the fishermen of the area immediately started searching the water with boat. Barjora police rushed to the spot after receiving the information. The fishermen eventually recovered Shubham’s frozen body after a couple of hours of effort at around 10:30 am.
Tarak Gangopadhyay, a member of the rescue team, said, “Six boys came here for a walk. Then one boy went to bathe in the river water and drowned. The police called us for a rescue. We went into the water and recovered the body. Another boy went in to save the Subham, that boy too could have drowned. But, He managed to survive.” Police recovered the dead body and sent it to Burdwan Medical College and Hospital for autopsy. NIT registrar Soumya Sen Sharma said, “We have come to know that the 6 students went to bathe in the Damodar without informing the hostel warden. They should have been more aware.” He said that the news has been sent to the student’s home. A shadow of grief has fallen on the entire college campus.
