DAYA News Bureau, 6th March 2024: Jemua Vadubala Vidyapeeth won the Sudhindra Kumar Sen Memorial Challenge Shield two years on a trot in the two-day under 16 school students football competition organized by Durgapur Adda Young Association. Durgapur TN High School won the Sudip Chakraborty Memorial Challenge Shield after getting defeated by 2-1 in the final. Ten school teams participated in the Shield tournament, which entered its third year; the tournament was held at Karangpara Sarvamangala Samiti football ground on 4th and 5th March.
Durgapur TN High School took the lead in the first half with a goal scored by Hemchandra Bauri, but Jemua Vadubala Vidyapeeth made a great comeback in the second half. Jemua’s Bishu Pahari equalized midway through the second half. And almost at the end, a player of TN High School handballed in his own penalty box, the referee gave a penalty; Bapan Bagdi made no mistake by pushing the ball into the net to take the final lead for his team.
Hemchandra Bauri of TN High School was adjudged the best player of the final.
Tridibendu Sengupta Memorial Award was given to the footballers of the winning team and Ranjit Mukherjee Memorial Award to the runners-up team.
Apart from teachers from various schools, a good number of general spectators thronged to watch the final match.
Apart from Jemua Vadubala Vidyapeeth and Durgapur TN High School, 8 other school teams participated in this tournament; namely Ispat Nagri Meghnad Saha Secondary School, MAMC Township Modern High School, Bidhannagar Government Sponsored Boys High School, Sagarbhanga High School, DVC DTPS High School, DPL Old Boys, DPL New Boys, and students of Sinchon initiative run by Durgapur Adda Young Association.
This effort to take school students out of the virtual world of mobile phones and into the field took off in 2022. The organization is planning to hold this football tournament on a bigger scale in the future.
