Social organization Durgapur Adda Young Association, on the occasion of countries 76th Independence Day organized programmes throughout the day.
In the morning, clean and usable old clothes were distributed among the residents of ‘Dasir Bandh’ colony adjacent to Raghunathpur locality of Durgapur. The residents of this locality are extremely poverty stricken and earn their livelihood by working in stone quarries.
Utmost care was taken during sorting of the old clothes and packing them according to size and gender. The old clothes were collected from D.A.Y.A members and well-wishers. At the end of the distribution ceremony, sweets were distributed among all the residents of the colony.
In the evening, a programme was organized in the auditorium of Michael Madhusudan Memorial College in Durgapur. Sahitya Academy award winning writer and notable environmentalist Jaya Mitra adored the chair of ‘Chief Guest’, while eminent scholar and author of several bestselling books, Salil Biswas was the ‘Guest of Honour’ on the occasion.
12 students from economically poor families who passed 2018 Madhyamik exam (Class X West Bengal Board exam) with good marks were felicitated and gift vouchers worth 2500 INR was given to each of them. They could redeem these gift vouchers to buy only books and copies from a pre-designated book stall in Benachity. Of the 12 students, six were boys and six were girls.
The president of D.A.Y.A Dr. Samir Ranjan Bhowmik administered an oath whereby these 12 students vows to stand by the weaker sections of the society in their own way, when they become capable.
The first edition of the in-house magazine named ‘Roddur’ (meaning sunlight) was unwrapped by Jaya Mitra. The magazine contained articles from D.A.Y.A members, well-wishers and students who are part of the ‘Sinchon’ project.
The five students of ‘Sinchon’ project presented a collage of the song “Ei Desh EiDesh Amar EiDesh” and lines from six different poems illustrating India’s culture of ‘Unity in Diversity’.
Jaya Mitra expressed immense surprise after knowing about our ‘Sinchon’ initiative. She underlines the fact that it’s more important to be a ‘good human being’ rather than being rich. In her words she also stressed the need of protecting the ‘Mother Earth’. She has committed us of supporting us directly or indirectly in days to come.
Salil Biswas stressed upon the fact that ‘learning’ has to be made enjoyable. The pace of learning can’t be same for everyone, he said. It was indeed a memorable evening where all those present were immensely enriched.
