Restricted Traffic Movement Over Durgapur Barrage

DAYA News Bureau, 25th August 2022: Traffic on the bridge over the Durgapur Barrage will remain partially closed for a month. The district administration of Bankura and Paschim Bardhaman said that the bridge will remain partially closed as the repair work of the joint plate of the bridge has started.

Joint plate repair work has already started from 23rd August and will continue till 23rd next month.

This bridge connects Durgapur to Bankura, Purulia, Odisha and South India with two Midnapur. This bridge was built on the Damodar River in 1955; in 2020 a lock gate of Durgapur Barrage broke down and caused huge trouble. in A large area of ​​Durgapur and Bankura was plunged into severe water crisis.

A team was constituted to check the entire health of the bridge. After understanding the importance of the situation, the lock gate repair work began stepwise. Some lock gates have already been replaced. After that, to avoid the risk, the work of repairing the bridge of Durgapur barrage was started.

Now the work of changing the joint plate on the bridge has began. This work will continue for a month. Raja Bhattacharya, an official of the contracting agency, said, “People have to face some difficulties for a big job. Bankura administration is controlling the traffic well. It will take more than one month to get the work completed within a month.”

It has been decided that when the vehicle enters Durgapur from Bankura direction, the vehicle from Durgapur direction of West Burdwan towards Bankura will be stopped. In the same way, following the rules, the traffic will move in the same way from the other side. That is, only unidirectional movement of traffic over the bridge will be allowed at a time. The traffic of the bridge built over the Durgapur barrage will be controlled in this way for a month.

It is feared that common people will have to suffer a lot for this. Travelling time between Durgapur and Bankura will increase by at least half an hour.
