DAYA Remembers Bhagat Sigh on His Self Immolation Day

Various programmes were undertaken by the social welfare organization Durgapur Adda Young Association (DAYA) to celebrate the 91st ‘Self-Immolation Day’ of Shaheed-e-Azam Bhagat-Singh. The daylong programme was held at Bidhan Bhavan in Durgapur Steel City.

Like previous 4 years, a blood donation camp was held in the morning, where doctors and staff of Durgapur Subdivision Blood Bank collected the blood. Although 35 people came forward showing their interest in donating blood, 6 were declined due to their physical obligation and 29 people donated blood. Of these, 10 were female doors; the only reason to write this bit of information separately is to encourage women in donating blood in the future. In the hands of each blood donor, a laminated picture of Bhagat Singh was handed over as a memento, by the organization.

Poster Exhibition by students on the topic: Bhagat Singh’s Life & Living

There was a “poster exhibition” for school children, on the subject: “Bhagat Singh’s Life & Living”. A total of 48 students displayed their posters at the poster exhibition. Various aspects of the thought and teachings of Bhagat Singh came up, which clearly states, that the students are quite excited about Bhagat Singh. Needless to say, this poster exhibition would not have been successful without the cooperation of the teachers of various Bengali medium schools in Durgapur.

The top five posters were selected by two special guests of the day, Dr. Shubhashis Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Devaditya Bhattacharya.

After lunch, began the second half with the presentation of students of the organization’s ‘Sinchon’ project. This was followed by a dialogue based discussion on the topic: “Life and Living of Bhagat Singh”. The discussion between Dr. Shubhashis Mukherjee, a former professor at Calcutta University and Dr. Devaditya Bhattacharya, a young professor at Kazi Nazrul University, gave the audience an insight on the great revolutionary Bhagat Singh. They also sheds light on the relevance of Bhagat Singh today. What was Bhagat Singh’s point of view in the context of ‘atheism’ was specifically mentioned by Dr. Devaditya. Memorial gifts were handed over by the organization to the two guests.

A full house audience

The manner in which the school children cooperated and listened attentively to the discussion during the day-long program gave hope that the dream of nation building which Bhagat Singh dreamt off will definitely get fulfilled one day or the other.
