Durgapur Adda Young Association (D.A.Y.A) in its continuous effort to uplift the social and economic conditions of the downtrodden based on scientific and rational thoughts, observed the “National Science Day” with all due importance.
National Science Day is celebrated in India on 28 February every year to mark the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Indian physicist Sir C. V. Raman. The research paper of Raman was submitted on 28 February 1928. For this he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930.
D.A.Y.A organized a programme titled, “Does Stars and Planets Controls Our Future?”, at the Children’s’ Academy Hall in C-Zone of Durgapur. Students of Class VIII to X from 7 State Government’s Bengali medium schools located within Durgapur town were invited.
Nationally acclaimed scientist, Dr. Kaustuv Chaudhuri, who is also the Secretary General of Kolkata Astronomy Centre through a audiovisual presentation demonstrated the facts and figures of the stars and planets. The audiovisual show supplemented by Dr. Kaustuv Chaudhuri’s illustrations enthralled the audience and they themselves concluded how futile the claims of the so called astrologers are about these stars commanding our future.
His show also brought to the fore, that ‘astrology’ and ‘astronomy’ are not the same as is being claimed by several astrologers. While astronomy is the study of stars and planets, astrology is simply a profession to fool people riding on his fear.
After the audiovisual show, a ‘Quiz Programme’ was held among the students of participating schools based on the presentation of Dr. Kaustuv Chaudhuri.
The second edition of “Roddur” was uncovered by Dr. Kaustuv Chaudhuri. Roddur is the magazine of D.A.Y.A, and this edition was prepared with an aim of making it a “National Science Day” special edition.
