May Day, the day of the celebration of the victory of the rights of the working class, was celebrated by the social organization Durgapur Adda Young Association at the DTPS Welfare Center adjacent to Mayabazar in Durgapur on the morning of 1st May 2022. The well thought-out program aimed at educating the workers of the unorganized sector about their rights and making them health conscious.
In his 45-minute speech, in the presence of about 100 working people in the unorganized sector and about 30 workers of the organized industry, Dr. Sharmistha Das, highlighted the fact that there are so many food items available in the market at relatively low prices, but are highly beneficial in living a disease-free life. Several day-to-day habits, including food habits were also elaborated by Dr. Das by virtue of which one can live a healthy life for a long time.
Afterwards, eminent social researcher, essayist and teacher Shri Sumon Kalyan Moulik pointed out some government projects through which workers in the unorganized industry can get some temporary solution of their plight; however he categorically said that these government projects can’t give any permanent solution, for getting a permanent solution workers will have to remain in the path of united struggle.
In his speech, DAYA secretary Rajesh Sen stressed upon the need of unity among workers, regardless of their caste, language and religion. He also pointed out that the rulers, whoever it maybe, always try to create rift in workers’ unity on the basis of their caste and religion.
The members of the organization present the story and message of May Day through songs, poems, words and performances. This entire presentation was created and presented by members of the organization. The whole idea including the lyrics, the melody of the song, the poem is composed by the members of DAYA.
There was an excess of female working people in the program. The organization also arranged lunch for all the workers present in the program. In the afternoon, the history of May Day was read out to the students of Jibanpath Kendra-1 run by Durgapur Adda Young Association at Kamalpur Washing Plot and at the same time they were tried to explain the difference between ‘Adhikar’ and ‘Anudaan’ (Right and Dole). There was arrangement of dinner was given to all the students there.
