DAYA News Bureau, 13th November 2022: On 12th November (Saturday), under the initiative of Durgapur Adda Young Association (DAYA), the 3rd “Marie Curie – Meghnad Saha Science Conference” was held at Nepali Para Hindi High School with great success. Durgapur Adda Young Association has been organizing science conference every year since 2020 with the aim of creating a love and consciousness for science.
In the presence of more than 250 people including more than 200 students from 9 schools of Durgapur, three distinguished scientists and professors presented the Nobel Prize winning researches in Physics, Chemistry and Physiology in 2022 through a slide-show in simple language.
The day-long science conference began with a wreath offering to Marie Curie and Meghnad Saha. Nepali Para Hindi High School Headmaster Dr. Kalimul Haque announced the start of the program by offering floral tributes.
Abhijit Das, a scientist at CSIR-CMRI, Durgapur, presented in very simple terms the work of Alain Aspect, John F Clauser and Anton Zeilinger on the experimental proof of Bell inequality and quantum entanglement that won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physics for their research.
Dr. Snigdha Roy, Professor, Department of Chemistry, BB College, as the second speaker of the program, presented the work of three scientists, Carolyn R. Bartozzi, K. Barry Sharpless and Morten Meldal, who won the 2022 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for their breakthrough findings in molecular structure and bonding, in an engaging discussion.
As the last speaker, Prof. Dr. Arun Mukherjee, Department of Zoology, Raniganj TDB College, discussed the 2022 Nobel Prize in Physiology (or Medicine) awarded to Swedish scientist Svante Pabo for his discovery of the genome of human evolution.
39 posters were submitted in the poster exhibition and competition by students from 9 participating schools. The topic was to present the content of Nobel Prize-winning research in either physics, chemistry or physiology won alone (not in joint with other) by a scientist. Prizes are awarded to the 10 best poster makers (not first, second, third, etc.). Out of these 10, three were from Nadiha High School, two each were from Angadpur High School and Bidhannagar Govt Sponsored Girls High School and one each from Bidhannagar Govt Sponsored Boys High School, MAMC Township Modern High School and Durgapur Projects Township Boys High School.
In addition, 9 schools participating schools in the science conference had the opportunity to present their thought in a 7-minute speech on the topic “Science education and science consciousness are not the same”. 3 schools are awarded for the best speech (1st, 2nd, 3rd not so). The 3 awardees schools are – Durgapur Projects Township Boys High School, Bidhannagar Govt Sponsored Girls High School and Bidhannagar Govt Sponsored Boys High School. The attention and enthusiasm with which the students of class 8th to 12th standards tried to understand the discussions of the three speakers during the entire program are very encouraging. There was arrangement of lunch for all the students, teachers and science enthusiasts present in the event.
