Like every year, Durgapur Adda Young Association (DAYA) celebrated the 73rd Independence Day of the country on a very different note. On 15th August this year (2019), which also happens to be the ‘Foundation Day’ of the organisation, a helping hand was lent for those lesser privileged, for whom a little help means a lot.
The entire show was held at the “Fine Arts Club” hall in presence of more than 300 guest audience.
12 students from the economically weaker families, who performed quite well in 2019 Madhyamik (equivalent to Class X), were felicitated with a memento of appreciation, a sapling and a gift coupon of 2500 INR, with which they can buy necessary books and copies from a pre-designated book shop.
Three Durgapur athletes from economically weaker families, who have been trying to make their ways in the state level championship, were also felicitated and given running shoe and shocks.
Eminent historian and author Dr. Siddhartha Guha Roy delivered a lecture on “The Role of Working Class in India’s Freedom Struggle”. He enlightened the audience by drawing a fabulously crafted speech and mentioned about the various working class movement in the pre-independence era.
The 10 students (5 from class V and 5 from class VI) who are part of the ‘SINCHON’ initiative of the organisation staged a play, “Agaamir Classroom” written and directed by eminent theatre personality Gautam Sarkar.
The 12 students and 3 athletes who were felicitated in the evening took an oath to stand by the lesser privileged and downtrodden of the society in their limited capacity in days to come; the oath was administered by the president of the organisation, Mr. Anup Mukherjee.
Mr. Rajesh Sen, the secretary of the organisation in his short speech categorically mentioned that the organisation is in no way doing any act of kindness or showing sympathy to anyone, but are just trying to accomplish their social responsibility.
The 3rd edition of the organization’s mouthpiece ‘Roddur’ was unwrapped by the eminent guests of the evening including Poet Sabyasachi Deb.
As part of the celebration of Independence Day and the 5th founding day of the organization, good conditioned old but usable (not torn or dirty) clothes were distributed in the village of Banshia near Durgapur on 17th August; study materials were also handed over to the children there.
