Ignoring the inclement weather, the 2nd “Marie Curie – Meghnad Saha Science Conference” was held on 14th November at Bidhan Bhavan of Durgapur Steel Township. More than two hundred students and more than one hundred common people filled the auditorium and witnessed the event organized by Durgapur Adda Young Association aimed at building an interest on science among young minds.
Three eminent scientists and professors associated with science research enlightened the students about the discoveries of the Nobel prize winners of 2021 on the three science subjects of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine.
Dr. Punarbasu Chowdhury, Professor of Calcutta University spoke about the discoveries for which one half of the Physics Noble prize was jointly awarded to Syukuro Manabe and Klaus Hasselmann, while the other half to Giorgio Parisi. Manabe and Hasselmann jointly received the first of the prize for their groundbreaking contributions to our understanding of complex physical modelling of Earth’s climate, quantifying variability and reliably predicting global warming, while Giorgio Parisi was awarded with the other half for the discovery of the interplay of disorder and fluctuations in physical systems from atomic to planetary scales.
Dr. Snigdha Roy, Professor of Asansol BB College spoke about the discovery for which Benjamin List and David W.C. MacMillan was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.
Dr. Asmanj Chattaraj, Professor of Kazi Nazrul University discussed the Nobel Prize in Physiology elaborated in simple words, the discoveries of thermal and mechanical transducers for which the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology has been jointly awarded to David Julius and Ardem Patapoutian.
This year, an instant quiz competition was held based on discussions on the discoveries of Nobel Prize-winning scientists in three fields of science. There were also a poster exhibitions and competitions for students in grades eight to twelve. The theme of the poster was: “Life and work of any female Nobel laureate”.
In addition to awarding the top 20 poster makers, there were also prizes for the correct respondents to the instant quiz competition. As many as 70 posters were submitted, all the poster makers were appreciated by a certificate of appreciation.
The members of the organization presented a part of the play ‘Galileo’ written by Bertolt Brecht, translated in Bengali. Lunch was also provided to all participating students and teachers.
The daylong science conference held by DAYA is an unique initiative by the the social organization to inculcate scientific rationale in the society.
